Relationships Create Reasons.
Reasons that can lead to many great things for us in life, work, time of need, etc.
It’s more than just some type of PERSONAL BRANDING, it’s the level of ESTEEM that others hold you in when they think of you or when someone asks “What do you think about Michael?”
It’s amazing to me how often that RELATIONSHIPS have made a BIG DIFFERENCE in how things worked out for me over the years.
Not long ago I got a call out of the blue from an organization that I had never heard of. And they’re based here in my city. A couple of emails led to a Zoom call with some of their leaders and that eventually led to me speaking at their event.
One of the VPs asked me, “You’re probably wondering how we found out about you?” Of course, I answered. “Travis recommended you…HIGHLY!” I laughed out loud. “I LOVE Travis!” I exclaimed. Travis wasn’t just anyone to them…He was FAMILY!
I hadn’t seen Travis in years, but we’ve shared cigars and laughs on many occasions and I had given him a copy of one of my books once upon a time. He knew me and knew what I did professionally…and PERSONALLY.
It wasn’t my branding or my website or one of my amazing videos on You Tube ( :),
It was OUR RELATIONSHIP that gave him an excited confidence to highly recommend me to someone he knew!
Relationships have led to many of those kinds of stories over the years- mine and others, and CREATING RELATIONSHIPS is something we all should be aware of, not just in our life, but in our business as well.
It’s more powerful than a Google review or going LIVE on Facebook.
So HOW DO OTHERS SEE YOU?
As a RESOURCE? A Mentor or Confidant? A STAR? As Competition or a THREAT?
I couldn’t help but laugh when an artist at an event I was speaking at asked to draw ME. And She Did…that’s the caricature you see here.
Paying attention to HOW OTHERS SEE US, whether or not we agree, is critical. And the good news is…WE CAN CHANGE THE HOW! We can nurture and grow most any RELATIONSHIP, even if it takes some time.
A decade or so ago an Executive who took over an organization I had been doing work for came into a “not-so-great” situation with that organization and I got lumped in with the crowd of no-good “outsiders” that gave me little chance to begin our relationship on the right foot—No chance of winning him over. Years later he became a great friend and I spoke at his convention every year for many years and eventually began working with him and the organization on a big project that’s still going today. WHY?
Because when he started asking around about THIS YORK GUY, he received over and over again, in his words…nothing but great comments and feedback on how I could be counted on, did great work, worthy of his trust, was a great guy, etc. All from other RELATIONSHIPS I had built over the years. Pretty cool…
So today’s BIG IDEA is something as simple as paying attention to your RELATIONSHIPS, especially in business, because you just never know when they can CHANGE THINGS AROUND YOU for the BETTER.
