DRIVING BUSINESS: Here's How WE Do IT...
Mission Statements. Philosophies. CORE Values. Which Should YOU Have?
Michael York—Charlotte, NC October 19, 2015
Going through some of my old journals last week and came across this page from an initial conversation with a prospective client…who later became a client.
“What makes you different Michael?”
Great question. I could ask you the same thing!
So I just began sharing some of the ideas and principles that we used with other clients who wrote some really cool letters/emails about how it all worked out. Because as a friend of mine likes to say, SELLING is about ONE THING—RESULTS!
And so is coaching and consulting any business or individual.
“So do you have a MISSION STATEMENT?” That’s common right? lots of companies and organizations do. Usually prominently displayed in the lobby or hall.
No. We don’t.
We don’t have a MISSION STATEMENT—We have a PHILOSOPHY.
And we’re all about creating the right CULTURE.
Here are a few more notes from that day for a quick read that might just give you some food for thought…
Our PASSION:
“Improving Human Performance in a Results-Driven Environment”
Our CORE Values:
1. EXCELLENCE—Not Average (Bigger, Better, More…)
2. PEOPLE FIRST—Then Process (Good to Great Philosophy)
3. Learning/Growing/Leading (Promotion Pathway)
4. Life is Short—Make a DIFFERENCE (PERSONAL/ Rich Life)
“Profit and Growth Make All Our Other Core Values Possible”
Market and SELL with ACTIVE words (…I-N-G) SALES is past tense…SELLING is always going on.
What We’re ALL ABOUT--
· Creating Opportunity
· Growing People
· Developing Processes and Systems
· Supporting Teams
· Improving Results
· Rewarding Individuals
· Incenting Achievement
· Leading Edge
· Responding to Challenges
· Striving for Personal Bests
· Winning with Style
What’s amazing is that in the beginning some of these things sound difficult and daunting. But when looking through the right lens and communicating the vision…POWERFULLY, so many of those things become clear and understood. And can create some amazing success stories in a short period of time.
What about CORE VALUES? One of my favorites in this category is Chick-fil-A. “PUSH THE EDGE. Preserve THE CORE!”
Meaning out on the edge Chick-fil-A experiments with a variety of TESTS! Most all are about CHICKEN. Wraps or strips or grilled or fried. Maybe a frozen lemonade in the summer or a different shake in the winter. But chances are pretty good that you’ll never buy a BURGER there! Because THE CORE of what they’re all about is not open for discussion. The CORE remains intact.
And that means, among other things, you can’t buy ANYTHING on Sunday. It’s a CORE VALUE! Not open for discussion. How are you PUSHING THE EDGE with what you sell or how you sell it, while preserving THE CORE of what you’re all about?
Philosophies beat Mission Statements! And CORE VALUES create action and direction that could accelerate WINNING!
To Your Uncommon Success,
Michael
